REPRESENTATIVES OF RWANDA AND THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO HAVE REACHED A DRAFT PEACE AGREEMENT AIMED AT ENDING DECADES OF CONFLICT IN THE MINERAL-RICH EASTERN REGION OF DR CONGO.
THE DEAL, BROKERED BY THE UNITED STATES AND QATAR, OUTLINES STEPS FOR THE DISENGAGEMENT, DISARMAMENT, AND CONDITIONAL INTEGRATION OF ARMED GROUPS OPERATING IN THE AREA.
IT ALSO INCLUDES A JOINT SECURITY MECHANISM DESIGNED TO PREVENT FUTURE OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE AND IMPROVE LONG-TERM REGIONAL STABILITY.
THE AGREEMENT, WHICH COULD UNLOCK BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN WESTERN INVESTMENT, IS EXPECTED TO BE FORMALLY SIGNED NEXT FRIDAY IN A CEREMONY TO BE ATTENDED BY US SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO.
