THE GOVERNMENT OF RWANDA WILL TAKE IN 250 MIGRANTS DEPORTED BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.
SPOKESPERSON YOLANDE MAKOLO WHO CONFIRMED THE DEAL WITH NEWSMEN SAID THE EAST AFRICAN COUNTRY AGREED TO PROVIDE THE MIGRANT WITH WORKFORCE TRAINING, HEALTHCARE, AND ACCOMMODATION.
UNDER THE NEW DEAL WITH PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP TO IMPLEMENT A SWEEPING DEPORTATION STRATEGY AIMED AT QUICKLY REMOVING UNDOCUMENTED MIGRANTS FROM THE US, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHOSE COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN HAVE REFUSED TO TAKE THEM BACK, MOKOLO SAID RWANDA RETAINS THE RIGHT TO APPROVE EACH INDIVIDUAL PROPOSED FOR RESETTLEMENT.
HOWEVER, HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERTS HAVE RAISED SERIOUS CONCERNS ABOUT THE LEGALITY AND ETHICS OF THESE THIRD-COUNTRY DEPORTATION DEALS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY INVOLVE SENDING MIGRANTS TO COUNTRIES WITH WHICH THEY HAVE NO TIES WITH.
RWANDA FOLLOWS SOUTH SUDAN AND ESWATINI IN AGREEING TO RECEIVE DEPORTEES FROM THE UNITED STATES.
