DRC, UN BEMOAN M23 REBELS MASSACRE

THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO HAS CONDEMNED THE MASSACRE OF MORE THAN 300 CIVILIANS IN THE COUNTRY’S EAST BY M23 REBELS LAST MONTH, DESPITE THE EXISTING CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT.

ACCORDING TO THE UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICE, AT LEAST 319 CIVILIANS WERE KILLED IN A SERIES OF ATTACKS ON FOUR VILLAGES IN THE NORTHERN KIVU REGION IN JULY.

ALSO, INFORMATION GATHERED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO CORROBORATE THE UN’S REPORT CONFIRMS THAT MAJORITY OF THE VICTIMS, INCLUDING MANY WOMEN AND CHILDREN, WERE DEFENSELESS CIVILIANS WHO WERE SUMMARILY EXECUTED IN THEIR FIELDS OR VILLAGES.

HOWEVER, THE GOVERNMENT SENT ITS CONDOLENCES TO THE BEREAVED FAMILIES AND ASSURED THE WOUNDED AND SURVIVORS OF ITS UNWAVERING SOLIDARITY.
