GHANA HAS BECOME THE LATEST NATION TO RECEIVE PEOPLE DEPORTED FROM THE UNITED STATES AS PART OF WASHINGTON’S CLAMPDOWN ON UNDOCUMENTED MIGRANTS.
THE AFRICAN COUNTRY PRESIDENT, JOHN MAHAMA EXPLAINED THAT NATIONALS FROM SEVERAL WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES WOULD NOW BE ACCEPTED UNDER A BILATERAL ARRANGEMENT WITH THE US, WITH 14 ARRIVALS ALREADY RECORDED.
HE NOTED THAT THE DECISION WAS CONSISTENT WITH THE ECOWAS FREE MOVEMENT PROTOCOL, WHICH PERMITS CITIZENS OF MEMBER STATES TO TRAVEL AND RESIDE ACROSS THE REGION WITHOUT VISAS. THE INITIAL GROUP OF 14 DEPORTEES INCLUDED NIGERIANS AND A GAMBIAN, WITH THE NIGERIANS ALREADY ASSISTED BACK HOME BY BUS WHILE THE GAMBIAN WAS STILL RECEIVING SUPPORT FOR REPATRIATION.
