FLOOD DISPLACES OVER 500 HOUSEHOLDS IN KADUNA COMMUNITIES

AT LEAST 545 HOUSEHOLDS HAVE BEEN FORCED OUT OF THEIR HOMES AND 171 HOUSES DESTROYED FOLLOWING TWO DAYS OF HEAVY RAINFALL THAT TRIGGERED FLOODING ACROSS COMMUNITIES IN KADUNA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KADUNA STATE.

THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF THE KADUNA STATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY, USMAN MAZADU, DISCLOSED IN A STATEMENT ON TUESDAY THAT THE AGENCY HAD ALREADY CARRIED OUT AN ASSESSMENT OF THE DAMAGE WHILE COORDINATING RELIEF EFFORTS FOR DISPLACED FAMILIES.

HE EXPLAINED THAT THE DOWNPOUR, WHICH OCCURRED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 4 AND 5, OVERWHELMED SEVERAL NEIGHBOURHOODS, COMPELLING RESPONDERS TO MOVE FROM ROUTINE EVALUATION TO URGENT EVACUATION AS FLOODWATERS SUBMERGED HOUSES AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS.

ACCORDING TO MAZADU, THE JOINT EMERGENCY RESPONSE INVOLVED MULTIPLE AGENCIES INCLUDING THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY, CHRISTIAN AID, THE NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS, THE RED CROSS, AND THE KADUNA STATE FIRE AND PUBLIC SAFETY AGENCY.
