THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS RELEASED THE OFFICIAL LIST OF APPROVED SUBJECTS FOR NIGERIA’S REVISED BASIC AND SENIOR SECONDARY EDUCATION CURRICULUM WHILE CAUTIONING STAKEHOLDERS TO DISREGARD FAKE VERSIONS CURRENTLY BEING CIRCULATED.
ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT ISSUED IN LAGOS BY THE NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL NERDC, THE REFORMS WERE INTRODUCED UNDER THE NATIONAL EDUCATION SECTOR REFORM INITIATIVES TO REDUCE SUBJECT OVERLOAD AND PROMOTE BETTER LEARNING OUTCOMES ACROSS ALL LEVELS OF SCHOOLING.
THE NOTICE, SIGNED BY NERDC EXECUTIVE SECRETARY PROFESSOR SALISU SHEHU CONFIRMED THAT THE IMPLEMENTATION WILL BEGIN AT THE ENTRY POINTS OF EACH THREE-YEAR EDUCATION CYCLE, SPECIFICALLY PRIMARY 1, PRIMARY 4, JSS1, AND SS1.
THE COUNCIL EXPLAINED THAT THE UPDATED CURRICULUM PROVIDES STRUCTURED SUBJECT OFFERINGS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF LEARNING, RANGING FROM A MAXIMUM OF 10 SUBJECTS IN LOWER PRIMARY TO A BLEND OF COMPULSORY CORE COURSES, SCIENCE, HUMANITIES, VOCATIONAL, AND TRADE SUBJECTS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL.
NERDC FURTHER ASSURED THAT NATIONWIDE SENSITIZATION AND TEACHER CAPACITY BUILDING WILL COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION, STRESSING THAT THE REFORMS ARE INTENDED TO ENHANCE RELEVANCE, FLEXIBILITY, AND SKILL ACQUISITION IN NIGERIA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM
